Kenya – Giakanja
Though coffee growing had a relatively late start in Kenya, the industry has gained and maintained an impressive reputation. Since the start of production, Kenyan coffee has been recognized for its high-quality, meticulous preparation and exquisite flavors. Giakanja washing station in Nyeri county is owned and operated by Giakanja Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS). Farmers delivering to Giakanja cultivate coffee on farms that lie between the southern slopes of the picturesque Mt. Kenya and the foothills of the Aberdare mountain range. Their farms are small, averaging 250 to 350 trees and consistent of SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11. The latter two are relatively new varieties, which have the advantage of being more resistant to disease and can be harvested as soon as two years. This coffee is from the late harvest in 2023 and we find notes of blackcurrent and rosehip, combined with a lingering and bright acidity, which makes it perfect for a filter brew or a vibrant espresso.
