Colombia – Villa Betulia

This coffee is from the unique Caturrón variety, a mutation of Caturra. You won’t find it outside of Colombia, and even within the country, it is quite rare and difficult to grow. Luis Anibal decided to plant Caturrón as the main variety because of its resistance to leaf rust, high yield, and high-quality flavor characteristics.

We have featured coffee from Luis before because we enjoy the wild and experimental coffees he produces. Luis is a second-generation farm owner and has been in the business for over 40 years, but it hasn’t always been easy for him.

In 2011, Luis risked losing his farm due to bank debts. At the time, he was mainly selling his coffee to retailers, and the price he received was barely enough to cover his production costs, let alone repay the loan he had taken out to buy land to expand his farm. At that point, Luis turned to the Specialty Coffee Association in the city. They were willing to pay 15% more than the regular price. Even this wasn’t sufficient to reward Luis for the extra effort required to produce his specialty coffee, but it was enough to support Luis and encourage him to further explore this part of the industry. More than 10 years later, you can taste the result of planting new varieties, experimenting with processing methods, and perseverance.
